Before the war in Iraq began, Nikki and I had a conversation regarding the possiblity of war. I distinctly remember telling her that "we can take over the country, but what happens after is what's important." I was skeptical that take over of the country would be as easy as the Bush adminstration was potraying it to be. What did Wolfowitz say, something about the oil money would pay for the war? Or that we would be out of there by the end of the fall of '03?
Below is a trailer for a documentary that examines the aftermath of the fall of Baghdad. It does not question the validity of the war, but rather looks into the planning of a post-war Iraq. It conducts interviews with some of the major players at the time, including Under-Sect. of State Armitage. Very objective.
There is one telling moment when it is revealed that a recent grad (22-23 year old) is placed in charge of planning traffic control in Baghdad, even though she had no experience in urban planning! Crazy.
It will make you think about the conduct of the reconstruction of Iraq.
The film in entitled "No End in Sight".

I actually fear watching this to find out how much more volitile this situation is than I actually think. but fear is not good fuel for change - I just hope that whomever takes office next can turn this war around and find a way to bring our troops home, while leaving these people with some sense of REAL security and hope in themselves. how do you do that at this point?
Amanda,
i agree with you. we are stuck in a situtation where we can't really stay, but can't really leave either.
What i wonder is whether there really is a since of nationhood. do the Kurds in the north consider themselves Iraqi? this i think is the most critical thing in the Iraq. those there must have a sense of nationalism, that Iraq is one, not an amalgamation of different peoples.
I'm glad the situation is better now (so it seems) but i wonder if the country is becoming more divided, for it appears that one of the reasons that the violence is down is that the different groups have segregated themselves - balkanization - which in the long run can be trouble for the region.
So, what are your thoughts on the proposed state budget? Cutting education spending by 10%, shutting down one in five state parks. Ack!
Brian and I are interested in seeing the film. I feel like there is so much going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. (Or that the government doesn't want us to know about)
P.S..We also checked out one of the hillary websites you posted. The "hillary nutcracker" is hilarious!
